Minecraft server on Ubuntu server question

Hey everyone,
I'm very new to using Linux and was trying to setup a modded minecraft server on ubuntu server.
I have the minecraft server running in screen so that it can run continuously. I have ssh set up so I can access the server from my desktop. The server runs perfectly right up until I close the ssh connection. Then the minecraft server is still running fine but can't contact mojang when people try to log in, so without access to their authentication servers the connections are declined.
Opening the ssh connection again, then the minecraft server can once again contact the authentication servers.
Not sure what's going on here, any help would be greatly appreciated.
