The Philadelphia Eagles waived former first-round pick Derek Barnett on Friday, the team announced.

The defensive end is expected to draw interest and should land with a new team soon, adds Schefter.

A team claiming Barnett will owe him under $500,000 for the remainder of the season, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

The Eagles drafted Barnett with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 27-year-old was a key piece of Philadelphia's defense from 2019-21, starting 39 games and racking up 14 sacks and 110 total tackles. He also famously recovered Brandon Graham's forced fumble in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LII to help the Eagles beat the New England Patriots.

Barnett suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 1 of last year. With his role likely to be reduced in 2023, he requested a trade in August but ultimately stayed in Philadelphia.

The pass-rusher, who doesn't have a sack in eight games this season, didn't play in Monday's win over the Kansas City Chiefs after being ruled out for personal reasons.

The Eagles will continue to rely on a pass-rushing group of Graham, Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, and first-round rookie Nolan Smith.
