displayport allows only 1024x768 resolution

HP 8560p laptop running Debian Linux.
I have an external 23" monitor with a VGA and DVI-D port.
I installed a DVI-D to HDMI adapter, and a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter ( at the laptop end). Top resolution is 1024x768.
I checked the specs of the laptop;'s DP - and it allows more than 1920x1080.
The monitor on VGA works to 1920X1080. The DP to HDMI adapter is rated
to 4k ( 1080p). Yet can't get more than 1024x768 from DP. ?
I tried the monitor plugged into a DELL E7450's HDMI port, and it works to
1080p.
I changed operating systems twice on the HP( once to Linux Mint, and once to Windows 10), and still the same result.
??? Can any one help? I am relatively new to the depths of Linux, though I've been using it for a few years.
Thanks
