NBC dropping Al Michaels from NFL playoff coverage

Broadcasting legend Al Michaels won't be part of NBC's NFL playoff coverage this season, NBC confirmed to The Associated Press.

The No. 1 team of Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth will take three of NBC's four playoff games, while its top college crew of Noah Eagle and Todd Blackledge will take the other. NBC Sports vice president Greg Hughes confirmed those assignments to the New York Post's Andrew Marchand.

Michaels was widely criticized for a lackluster performance during the Jacksonville Jaguars' dramatic comeback wild-card win over the Los Angeles Chargers last season.

The 79-year-old moved to Amazon Prime Video to call Thursday Night Football ahead of the 2022 campaign, but his former network retained his services for the postseason.

Michaels said in November that he believed he'd be calling a playoff game on NBC.

"It's in my deal," Michaels told Marchand. "Where are you hearing that from? That's part of my deal. Are you hearing something that I'm not hearing?"

Michaels also said he intends to return in 2024 to complete his three-year deal with Amazon.
