Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud won't play against the Tennessee Titans this week, the team announced Saturday.

The rookie sensation left last Sunday's loss to the New York Jets after suffering a concussion in the fourth quarter. He didn't practice this week or travel with the team as he's yet to clear the NFL's protocol.

"He's just getting back healthy," Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans said of Stroud on Friday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. "That's the main thing, him getting back healthy."

Davis Mills will presumably replace Stroud under center for the Texans, who also roster veteran Case Keenum. Mills - a third-round pick in 2021 - has 26 starts under his belt.

Stroud's absence is a big blow to the 7-6 Texans. They're currently the No. 8 seed in the AFC and haven't made the playoffs since 2019.

The Ohio State product has taken the NFL by storm since being drafted second overall in April. The front-runner for Offensive Rookie of the Year, Stroud's completed 62.4% of his passes for 3,631 yards and 20 touchdowns against five interceptions this season. He's also added three scores on the ground.

Stroud isn't the only key Texans player slated to miss Sunday's game. Rookie pass-rusher Will Anderson Jr. and linebacker Blake Cashman have also been ruled out due to ankle and hamstring injuries, respectively. Wide receiver Nico Collins, who left last week's game early with a calf ailment, is listed as questionable.
