The Chicago Bears are expected to retain head coach Matt Eberflus for next season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Chicago has produced a 6-9 record with two games remaining in the regular season. The Bears have shown some signs of improvement after the 53-year-old led the team to a 3-14 mark in his first year.

The 2023 campaign has presented some hurdles for Eberflus in his second year at the helm. The head coach took over play-calling duties after defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned in September to take care of his health and family. The team also fired running backs coach David Walker.

Eberflus accepted the head coaching role after serving as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018-2021.

It appeared that the Bears were trending in the wrong direction at the beginning of the 2023 season, losing five of their first six games. Yet the team has found some late-season momentum, winning three of its past four games.

While Eberflus could stick around for another season with a positive showing in the final two weeks of the season, the future of Justin Fields remains uncertain. The uneven play of the 2021 first-round pick is paving the way for a major decision about his status with the franchise in the offseason.

Despite their success, the Bears are poised to have two first-round picks, including the Carolina Panthers' selection that was acquired via the trade that brought DJ Moore to Chicago.

The Bears hold a 9-23 record in 32 games with Eberflus on the sideline.

Chicago hosts the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
