Bears GM: Team will 'turn every stone' to make QB decision

The Chicago Bears plan to look at every option when it comes to deciding the future of the team's quarterback position.

With the No. 1 overall pick in their possession and Justin Fields coming off his third season, general manager Ryan Poles said Wednesday that the organization is in "information-gathering mode," according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin. Poles added that he still has confidence in Fields.

"We are going to turn every stone to make sure we make a sound decision for our organization," Poles said, according to The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain. "I do think Justin got better. I do think he can lead this team. At the same time, there's a unique situation and our staff has to look at everything."

Fields ended the 2023 campaign with 16 touchdowns to nine interceptions through the air and four scores on the ground. However, the Bears finished below .500 for a third straight year.

If Chicago chooses to retain Fields, it will also have to decide whether to exercise his fifth-year rookie option. Poles said the team hasn't made that decision, according to Cronin.

The Bears could also opt to draft a premium quarterback prospect after landing the No. 1 overall pick via a trade with the Carolina Panthers last offseason. The top passers in the class are expected to include Caleb Williams (though he's yet to officially declare) and Drake Maye, among others.

The Bears' brass elected to retain head coach Matt Eberflus for 2024, but the team dismissed offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and several offensive coaches Wednesday. Eberflus said the Bears split with Getsy because "the growth and development of the offense had to be better than what it was," according to Fishbain.

Chicago has struggled offensively in recent years, ranking 23rd and 18th respectively in points scored over the last two seasons.
