New Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters believes the team can compete in the near future without a complete teardown.

"This is not a total rebuild. There are a ton of wonderful people here that just need leadership," Peters said during his introductory press conference, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

He added, "I believe that there are a few cornerstone pieces on this roster. I believe there's a lot of work to do. ... That's an ongoing process. I've started a little bit, but we have a lot of work to do."

The Commanders have a few key players scheduled for free agency, including cornerback Kendall Fuller, wide receiver Curtis Samuel, and linebacker Cody Barton. However, the club is in a good spot to replace departing players and build for the future.

Washington currently has the most cap space in the league with $75.3 million, according to Over The Cap. Only four players are slated to carry a cap hit of $10 million-plus in 2024, setting Peters up with the financial wiggle room to make additions.

The Commanders also hold nine picks in the 2024 draft, including the No. 2 selection. The upcoming draft is stacked with quarterback talent, with Caleb Williams and Drake Maye headlining the group.

"It's a great opportunity," Peters said of holding the No. 2 pick. "But we still have to hire a head coach, and we're going to do that full process collaboratively. ... We're far from making a decision on that, but really looking forward to diving into that process."

The 44-year-old Peters will help the Commanders find their next head coach. They have interviewed or requested to speak with many candidates. Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is their top target, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

"We want the best leader for this team. ... It's not going to be in a box - offense or defense - it's going to be the best leader for this organization," Peters said of what Washington is looking for in its next head coach.
