Mate: No access onscreen keyboad after screen-blank

If I've missed an existing addressing this, my apologies.
I have an Acer laptop with Mate running HDMI to my main television.
After blanking the screen I have to physically eneter my pw (no way that Ive found to display onsceen keyboard)
On tv #2 I have Mint installed to attached laptop and although Onboard doesn't come up the default keyboard does and I can use the wireless mouse to ebter pw and proceed.
Where's the hiccup? The switch I'm missing in Mate?
Gotta be something simple...
