Fangio done with Dolphins, reportedly will be Eagles DC

Former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is set to sign a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles to come on board in the same role, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Dolphins and Fangio agreed to part ways Wednesday after one season together.

"When we assessed the season, it became apparent that this was the best path forward for all parties involved," head coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement.

A report following Fangio's Miami departure indicated the Eagles were targeting the veteran coach for their defensive coordinator vacancy. The Dolphins apparently allowed Fangio to leave so he could be closer to his family in Pennsylvania.

The Eagles are in the midst of overhauling their coaching staff under Nick Sirianni with openings at offensive and defensive coordinator. Sean Desai began the 2023 season as Philadelphia's defensive coordinator before his play-calling duties were handed to Matt Patricia near the end of the campaign. Neither assistant will return in 2024.

Sirianni, who was speaking to the media when rumors broke of the Eagles' interest, was mum on the potential of adding Fangio initially.

We got a lot of good targets we're working through," the head coach said, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Fangio has ties to the Eagles as he worked as a consultant for the franchise in 2022. He previously said it's possible he would've become Philly's defensive coordinator in 2023 if the position had opened sooner.

Miami's defense under Fangio finished 10th in yardage and 22nd in points allowed in 2023. His defenses have ranked in the top 10 in points allowed 10 times during his career as a head coach and coordinator.

With the Eagles, Fangio will be tasked with repairing a defense that allowed 25.2 points per game, the third most in the NFL.
