SMR HDD into a laptop : how to solve it?
by hd99 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6J7AN)
hello
i have been asked to solve a little problem with a computer
it's a asus, while win10 was so slow, i have been asked to erase it and see "what's the problem"
i wasnt expecting...
i replaced win10 by win8, whom run faster, but still a bit slow.
then, linux mint/debian, whom runs very slow, compared to same 4GB RAM toshiba computers, whom runs well.
after few hours, stating that :
-the windows/special keys pressed, 10secs minimum are required to open the cinnamon menu
-to open the terminal, it asks too that same time
.. and this is just after a fresh start, no more than five minutes of uptime. On fresh install.
so i went up to understand that was maybe the hard drive, whom works everytime, really everytime.
i searched a bit about it : st1000lm035-1rk172 with "slow" suffix.
well, i have been twice badly surprised :

plus this :

it's true that this computer is totally slowed down by it's hard drive. my wonder is : how to disable the SMR technology? to get it back to a normal speed?
thank you

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but the reason of why the performance of this exact model of HDD "ST1000LM035-1RK172" is so crappy, is because is a SMR Drive. SMR drives are awful as boot drives, that is because of the way they works, for that reason is that they are used for the so called "archive" drives, where storage space is more important than performance. https://www.tenforums.com/performanc...ml#post2019066 |
