Knights chess program moves my pieces

I would not be asking such a question, except that I have been trying to debug some very strange behavior on another program, that makes be question the buginess of the compiler, and or my machine.
I need an opinion independent from either of those, and this example, is just weird.

I tried the knights chess program, distributed with Slackware, the other night. I have never tried this one before, but Slackware did not ship the previous chess program that I had been using with this new release.

I make several moves, and Sjeng responds, and then I move a pawn and the Knights chess program advances
the game by several moves. The chess program, to do this, made at least one move of my pieces, automatically. It did not make random moves, the moves are quite logical, but are only one choice out of many. In one case it went into the Italian game, which I would not have played.

It has done this several times. It does NOT have any the usual signs of broken-ness such as graphic glitches. It is just that it makes moves of my pieces without my permission.
I have not found anything in the Help or config to explain this.
There is no control that I can find to enable or disable this behavior.

Anybody else get this behavior from the Knights chess program ???
