What to put on an empty partition - please advice.

Dear LQ
There is an 8Gb almost empty partition on my disk and wonder how to utilize it in the most efficient way. Originally it was /usr/local, but nothing was installed there. So I changed it to /var, but it only occupies 2% oh those 8G.
My partitioning scheme is as follows:
/boot 300Mb 30%
/ 30Gb 40%
/swap 3Gb
/home 40Gb 100%
/var 8Gb 2%
Would it be more correct to allocate the empty partition to /tmp or /opt instead of /var? Please give me some suggestion... :)
