Devin McCourty disappointed by 'The Dynasty' series: Feel like I got 'duped'
Devin McCourty has some issues with the new Apple TV+ documentary series "The Dynasty: New England Patriots."
The series focuses on the Patriots' 20-year run of success under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, which saw the team win six Super Bowl championships. But McCourty, who spent his entire 13-year NFL career in New England, said the series focused too much on the negative aspects of the Patriots dynasty.
"I felt like I got kind of duped," McCourty told fellow former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison during a conversation on NBC Sports. "Because I was just like you - I did like four or five hours (of filming) in New York, and then I did another two or three hours in Massachusetts, and I was like, 'Man, this is gonna be great. Like the storytelling, we're talking about this, and we're talking about that.' And then I watched, and I was just like, man, only things I said that could come across as negative towards Bill was the only thing (used).
"Like, I mean, I had different kind of quick sentences on things, but the longest thing I talked about was 2016 with Trump and the letter (Belichick sent in support of his candidacy for president) and everything. And I thought that was probably the worst part. That everything that we all gave to the 20 years that it encompassed, they only hit anything that was negative."
Harrison also took issue with how Belichick was depicted in the series.
"Bill was a hell of a coach," Harrison said. "They act like the last three or four years, 'cause the Patriots struggled, that Bill can't coach. You give me one game, and you give me Bill's Xs and Os, I'll take him over anybody ... I just didn't like the way that he was made out."
Belichick parted ways with the Patriots in January after 24 seasons as head coach. The 71-year-old amassed a 266-121 regular-season record in New England and went 30-12 in the playoffs.
