How do I resolve this emergency mode issue

Hi there, Currently taking an intro to linux course and I got to a point where we were creating two new partitions. When I had entered the values for my start and end of the partition it said it exceeded the availability of GB. I decided to test my luck and do a write through and reboot, now my log in screen is saying I am in emergency mode. I have tried all the suggested bash prompts it suggested on the screen, but is saying it does not recognize the command. Any suggestions? I have tried rebooting and powering off the vm machine but am having no luck and I cant continue with completing my lab. I am also concerned that if I completely wipe all the work I have done I will fall behind and have to do everything all over again.
