NFL owners voted to approve a new kickoff format Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The format will be implemented for the 2024 campaign and revisited next offseason.

It's inspired by the setup that the XFL used before it merged with the USFL.

The new hybrid kickoff aims to increase the number of returns and lower the number of injuries by decreasing the speed at which the kick and return teams collide. The return team can have up to two returners in the landing zone, while the remaining players on the receiving team are in the setup zone.

Players in the setup zone and the kick coverage unit, which lines up at the kickoff start line, can't move until the kicked ball has hit the ground or a returner has fielded it in the landing zone. The new format also eliminates fair catches on kickoffs. If a ball hits in the landing zone, it must be returned.

Touchbacks that go into or through the end zone while in the air will now come out to the 30-yard line instead of the 25. Kicks that hit the landing zone and go into the end zone will come out to the 20-yard line.

Onside kicks are also receiving an overhaul. Teams must declare to officials that they're attempting an onside kick when trailing in the fourth quarter. The onside kick will then use the existing rules.

Here's an example of what the new format looks like:
