The New York Jets made legitimate attempts to hire someone to a senior position who would overrule offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett this offseason, SNY's Connor Hughes reports.

New York didn't part ways with the 44-year-old despite the offense's struggles in 2023. The team ranked 31st in yardage (265.3 yards per game) and 29th in scoring (15.8 points per contest) with quarterback Aaron Rodgers sidelined for all but four snaps due to an Achilles tear.

Hackett was Rodgers' offensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers from 2019-21. Rodgers apparently changed Hackett's calls repeatedly during practices last summer.

The club finished with a 7-10 record for the second consecutive season but retained head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.

Hackett has been heavily scrutinized over the last two seasons. He was fired after just 15 games as the Denver Broncos' head coach in 2022 and later publicly criticized by current Broncos coach Sean Payton. Rumors suggested the Jets would fire him following the 2023 season.
