Linux works on laptop using memory stick, but not when installed, Nvidia GPU issue

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, and what with all the issues now surrounding Windows, I decided to try out Linux. Downloading a few versions, such as Mint, Zorin, etc. and running them from the memory stick worked just fine. But when I installed them, I get severe screen flickering, and the laptop then crashes.

I set the graphics to use a non-Nvidia driver, Nouveau, but the issue persists. Even though the Nvidia hardware may be faulty, Mint and Zorin do run perfectly fine from a USB memory stick, using the Nouveau graphics driver.

Would anyone know why Zorin, Mint, etc. can run fine with the non-Nvidia driver when running on a memory stick, but not when the O/S is actually installed to the laptop? I have confirmed the same non-Nvidia driver is in use when the Linux O/S is run in either mode: USB or fully installed.

As for its Windows history, Windows was crashing and the display flickered quite badly. So, I tried re-installing Windows in various ways, but after the installation, it would again lock up. I believed, which I think I have since confirmed, that the onboard Nvidia graphics card has something wrong with it. I would have liked to disable the Nvidia driver in Windows, but the laptop just crashes shortly after I start it up when finishing the new Windows installation. So I can't even get it into safe mode to try that.

Many thanks to anyone who can assist.
