Computer crashed, emergency mode upon restart, now scans disk before boot

Using Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon.

I would appreciate help on deciding what is wrong with my computer and how to fix it please.

Numbered sequence of events:

1) Yesterday as I was editing a post on this forum, Linux Questions, the browser suddenly disappeared, the desktop was not there but instead there was a black screen with some error or other message I don't remember. I pressed the power key for several seconds, which on my computer makes it power down.

2) When I restarted it, it scanned the disk - it has never done that before. When it finished it said nothing about the result that I could see. It went into something called "Emergency Mode". When I tried to type text at the prompt nothing happened, so I made it power down.

3) -----away from home working etc etc------

4) This morning I used a paperclip to open the DVD drive and put the Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon LiveDVD in, and booted it. I thought I had what used to be called the BIOS set it up so that it should boot from the DVD drive.

It scanned the disk, as previously. To my surprise it booted normally apart from that. The desktop showed the LiveDVD in the DVD drive. I could access files on the disk, and it seemed to be working as usual apart from that disk scan.

5) I removed the LiveDVD from the drive, and re-booted. It scanned the disk, but apart from that again it booted normally. I am now writing this post using it.

How can I find out what is wrong? And then, how can I fix it please?

Thanks.
