trackpad sdcard reader conflict

I have an old Dell XPS 13 laptop with a trackpad, built-in sdcard reader problem. I have copied a large number of my compact discs to a 512 gig sdcard. The XPS 13 has a built in sdcard reader. After playing a few tracks from the card, the trackpad ceases to function; seemingly the only way to restore it is to re-boot. As an experiment, I mounted the card using an external usb/sdcard adapter. There are no conflicts. Unfortunately that ties up one of the two usb slots which is problematic. Can someone suggest a way to prevent the conflict and allow the built-in sdcard reader and trackpad to co-exist?

Thank you.
