Can you tell me how to use hard links?

Previously, I had written a backup rsync shell-script that used hard-links.
Now, I have a movie archive and some/many of these are listed to the actors. Some actors 2,3,4 for some movies, and if I use hard links properly they will take no space to cross-reference these movies.
I have been trying to remember how to use links, properly but I always get an error saying that I am linking into a directory.
These are staying within the same file-system.
Can anyone tell me how I can exactly make such a hard-link.
Thank you for reading this request, and have yourself an awesome day!
