MPlayer plays VP9 videos slowly

MPlayer plays MP4(AVC) videos just fine, but WEBM(VP9) videos play slighly slower. These formats are according to the download table (-F) in yt-dlp. Example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruNst_SXvIk
Using "-speed 1.08" in MPlayer corrects the speed of VP9 videos to normal(same as AVC videos play). Tested thus far, this happens on 480p and 360p videos downloaded from Youtube. 480p is the upper limit for good performance on my Atom N270 CPU, 720p is where performance issues begin.
I'm using mplayer-1.5_2 on Void Linux in a TTY(fbdev2) with ALSA for audio(single device, Intel NM10 with driver snd_hda_intel).
