OS/distro usable for a Gateway 4520GZ (i686)

I have an old Gateway 4520GZ from around 2003 I think, and I want to put something on it that would allow me to actually use it for fun. It has an i686 Intel Centrino and 1GB of RAM. The CPU doesn't appear to have PAE, which has made some distros cause trouble on it. antiX seems to work, but I think their mirrors are messed up, and I would also prefer something a bit more minimal if possible. I would like to avoid systemD purely due to resource constraints. I don't really care if a BSD or a Linux distro or whatever are the best option, I just want something that works well on it.
I tried Slackware (both -current and 15) and couldn't get the kernel to load no matter what I do. Void was able to get into the installer, but it wasn't working with the network card.
