Bootloader error 1 on initial install Lubuntu 24.04 LTS

Hi. My first time trying Linux. Have an older Asus laptop with Pentium dual core 64, 3gig ram, BIOS, Windows 10. I burned a Lubuntu 24.04 LTS image to a DVD. Runs great in live mode. Now I'm trying to install alongside windows. Eventually I will get rid of windows, but want to figure out printer drivers and a few other details first before I dump it.
On HDD, C: only had 39GB free, I wasn't sure if that would leave enough space to run windows if I partitioned that. D: was almost empty, so I created 165GB of free space there, and installed to that.
I followed some instructions from Youtube that probably aren't quite right for my situation. Used manual partition, 1st partition: 512 MB, fat32, mount point /boot/efi, flags BIOS-grub and boot, partition type Logical. 2nd partition: 165.51 GB, ext4, mount point /, flags Bios-grub and Boot, partition type Logical.

I got an error popup, "Installation Failed- Bootloader Installation error: The Bootloader could not be installed. The installation command
grub-install-target=i386-pc--recheck--force/dev/sda
returned error code 1."
I thought the /boot/efi might be the problem, so I deleted everything and tried again with the first partition mount point /boot. I got the same error.
I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong, since I have no idea what I'm doing. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
