We have 3d covered, why not graphic design yet?

I reminisced in another thread QuarkXpress, the DTP software of the '90 that got obliterated together with its vector cousin CorelDraw by indesign. I find it strange and somewhat frustrating that so many years later open source has Blender 3D with rendering and everything Maya has but, to this day, there's no decent DTP open source "indesign clone". Even GIMP seems clumsy and cluttered for someone coming from photoshop, at least GIMP doesn't crash every other click like Scribus and Inkscape. :(
Strange especially given that as far as I know Adobe switched to software as service at some point, making ppl pay a subscription instead of a one time purchase. My graphic design days are long gone but I'd love to be able to make Christmas cards for the family in something with a decent interface at least, maybe less buggy. My only explanation so far is that ppl I know who remained in the business tend to also remain Apple fundamentalists. I wonder if that's the only reason, any ideas?
PS unrelated, to site admin: since "You do not have permission to create tags. You may only use existing tags." shouldn't I get a drop-down list instead of a text box for tags?
