Cows and cats being considerate to humans

Recently I was walking along a footpath (probably translates as "trail" in American English) in the countryside, across a very large field that had a small herd of eight or nine cows in it.

The herd was standing at the far edge of the field, over the footpath, and more importantly, right in front of the exit stile. In other words, blocking it.

But then as I approached them, the whole herd moved out of the way!

Perhaps it was coincidence, perhaps they thought I had a dog with me. Or were they being considerate? Most of them were watching me as I walked past.

Second example: cats. Where I live there are several cats in the street. In the past they - and some humans - would always take a short cut across my front lawn. And sometimes they would leave unwelcome gifts on the lawn as well.

I never walk over the lawn myself, and whenever I saw a cat on the grass I would chase it away.

Now all the cats take the long way around and never walk on the grass. Even new cats do this. Nor do they leave any unwelcome gifts either. I also saw a cat, who is probably a pet of a near neighbour, sitting just off the lawn and watching me.

Coincidence, or what?
