Slackware Terminal, see past screen output

I just installed 15.0 (AMD64) as a server so I didn't want any X-Windows or GUI. When I login to the default terminal I notice I only have one screen of scrollback if that's the correct term. I tried the old shortcuts of SHIFT+PGUP and SHIFT+PGDOWN and they do nothing. Once my "one screen" of output is off screen I can't go back and copy and paste any of past output.
From Googling the Internet I think this is because this feature (SHIFT+PGUP) is no longer in the Kernel. I also tried creating a ~/.screenrc file and it doesn't seem to be parsed at all. So my question is how do I get a more usable terminal?
