Any FOSS games as great as Star Ruler 2 to occupy my time for a month or two while in transitional process

At somewhat of a loose end while in a transitional phase.
Star Ruler 2 was a really nice gesture of the makers making it FOSS.
Anything else worth checking out?
Not talking about the same but as engaging?
I like 4xes mostly or RPG but don't expect anything decent of the latter.
I am not too much of a stickler for graphics (my desktop is circa 2013 after all) but I find I am not able to get into a game if graphics are too bad.
Some games like baldur's gate with their hand drawn backdrops I find have not really aged and still look great and enchanting. Its successor, being full 3d, Neverwinter Nights, on the other hand, looks really 'janky' now to me, as you yanks would say.
Behemoths like dwarf fortress do have that intellectual wow factor, regardless of asci graphics, but have not had the courage to try biting that one off as yet.
Surely I have not worn out Star Ruler 2 yet but wondered if there were any more suggestions.
