New law limiting confinement was scheduled to take effect after 26 died in city jails in two years
New York City mayor Eric Adams over the weekend declared a state of emergency in local jails to prevent them from enacting a new law limiting solitary confinement in the lock-ups.
The law was scheduled to take effect Sunday after at least 26 people had died in New York City jails since January 2022. Adams' emergency declaration came Saturday.
