Easier to set up a windows vm+nordvpn than to get nordvpn working on slackware?

Nordvpn simply refuses to work. I can't get nordvpnd to run on boot, when started manually then I get permission denied on nordvpn c despite being a member of nordvpn group. Tobyls hack doesn't work, running as root doesn't work, it will log in but get "the vpn connection has failed" when trying to connect with nordvpn c.
Why is nordvpn so bad?
Edit: I had it working on 14. who knows why it won't work now.
