Has anyone else noticed odd display behaviour of vim 9.0 in Slackware 15??

The problem intermittently affects vim running in an xterm; gvim always displays normally.
The display on opening a file is normal but changes often do not show up properly. All kinds of odd things can happen. For example a new line made with the o command might show a duplicate of the text in the line above instead of being blank. Deleted text might still be visible.
Going into input mode causes the INSERT prompt to appear at the bottom of the page as expected, but it sometimes still hangs around after pressing esc to get back into command mode. When this happens, you are in fact in command mode and you can file your work, but it looks as though you are stuck in insert mode.
None of these things are reproducible. Sometimes the program behaves normally and sometimes it's unusable. But as far as I can see, the commands I enter are actually obeyed, whether it seems that way or not.
