How can I send an effective wakeonlan from a PC at boot time?

I often need to wakeonlan a couple of (linux) PCs from my (linux) desktop machine when it has booted.

I thought it might work as a cron job with @reboot /usr/bin/wakeonlan <macaddr>, but it doesn't. I'm assuming it fails because the network is not up when @reboot occurs(?).

What would be a reliable way to get wakeonlan to work from a booting PC, other than start job from the desktop environment?

Cheers
