Fresh installation and update times-W10 vs Linux
by beachboy2 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6Q6EV)
I can never understand why some Linux users are so reluctant to doing a fresh installation to solve a problem which has already taken several hours and there is still no solution in sight.
It should take about 30 minutes to do a fresh Linux installation, including updates, subject to hardware constraints.
Admittedly that does not include the **time taken to copy and paste the backup of personal data from an EHDD or elsewhere, but this can be happening while you take the dog for a walk, read a book or mow the lawn. Generally, you do not need to be there in person.
NB **The way to save time on backing up personal data is to have a separate Home partition.
This will then be preserved, provided the correct procedure is followed:
Use the sdX partition (with size exactly the same as original) as ext4, but do NOT format it and then mount it as /home.
For UEFI boot:

For Legacy boot:

Some time comparisons:
1. Installation of W10 including all updates takes several hours, with user attendance required.
2. Installation (including all updates) of Peppermint OS-(Devuan) Fully Loaded took 29 mins.
3. 43 updates on Endeavour OS took 6 mins.
4. 5updates on *W10 took 13 mins.
*The only reason I know this is because I managed to acquire a W10 Pro business laptop in mint condition at a very good price:
Lenovo ThinkPad E15 15.6 inch Ryzen 5 5500U 16GB 256GB SSD W10 Pro.
It will eventually run Linux.
