Nvidia Idling display engine timed out in poe

I have been suffering with a issue where a specific game I play tends to cause the nvidia driver to time out. As far as I can tell it seems to happen in Path of Exile played from lutris only but in the past some other games have caused problems on certain driver versions.

Sometimes I can play for a long time then boom my screen hardlocks I cant move the mouse but i see the system clock ticking or music will still be playing. After a few seconds if im quick I can hit ctrl+alt+escape and skull and crossbones the game, sometimes the entire pc is locked and requires a power button to reboot. I only just discovered the "Idling display engine timed out" in Xorg.0.log. It seems to be in there many times.

I am running the 980GTX 4GB with 555.58.02 right now. I have ran many driver versions and all of them have random freezes, some have bad performance. The current kernel 6.10.3 and this driver seems the most stable it can run days without anything crashing if im not running path of exile. But I think its a nvidia driver related issue or maybee a kernel related issue.

I have been on a few different kernel versions over time and tried nearly every driver release since 470.86. And I seem to always have some kind of issue.

Googling the issue shows only a few posts on this problem. Path of exile forums has no solutions.

Is there a way to prevent nvidia idle driver from being interupted? Could it be kernel pre-empt mode? X.org vs wayland issue? My kernel config was pulled directly from the slackware-current repo and only a couple options changed when I compiled.

This pc is pretty rock solid and the psu seems good as I can crunch hard all day and compile code and stuff and be running many tasks. I run no windowing compositor. Forced Pipeline is off. Max performance is on when gaming. Manual fan speed set high. Temps seem good.

Sorry for the wall of text. If anyone else has had this issue or has some ideas of what I might try hit me up thanks.
