Best GPUs for an old machine
by Ranyel from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6Q7GH)
My family has an old PC running Linux exclusively. It works, but it's a 2009-ish machine, so it's slow even when running a fairly light OS like MX 19. For a variety of reasons, I'd rather try to speed it up a little instead of replacing it entirely. There's no GPU installed, so I thought about installing one to solve the speed problem. But before I do any shopping, I have a few questions that a simple Internet search hasn't given me.
First off, this PC has a BIOSTAR TA790GXE 128M motherboard, which (as I mentioned above) came out in 2009. My main question is: Which GPUs are compatible with this board? And more specifically: Would any compatible GPU appreciably improve the speed of a machine this old? Or should I look at other options to get a little more life out of the computer?
P.S.: I will probably expand the RAM, too.
