Recently I came across MiniOS - I downloaded & started with the XFCE version, very small & quite fast with the basics baked in, to which I added some more programs, & saved my setup - it's a really nice little distro for anyone wanting such a setup.

Fatdog64 is another that I like, in an emergency, full featured desktop system.

Both of the above can run from a 1GB pendrive.
Then there's Void/XFCE a distro that installs to less than 3GB of disk space.
