The Open Network (TON) operations resumed after a second outage in just 36 hours after the first. The outage was caused by overwhelming traffic from a recently launched meme coin, DOGS.

The TON network, offline since 7:17 pm UTC on August 28, came back to full functionality around 1:00 am UTC on August 29. This detail was confirmed in an announcement on TON Community's Telegram channel.

Notably, the community was relieved by the return to normal operations. They expect withdrawal and deposit transactions to TON wallets to be completed in the coming hours and days.

Update on TON Network Outage

This latest disruption, lasting just over six hours, marks the second major interruption in TON's services. It resulted from a surge in network activity linked to the recent launch of a new memecoin called Dogs (DOGS), which operates on the TON blockchain.

This was not the first time that DOGS caused such a disruption. Just a day earlier, on August 27, the networkwent offline around 11:00 p.m. UTC. It stayed that way for approximately six hours beforereturning to normal at 5:30 a.m.UTC the following day.

The cumulative impact of these outages is significant, with the TON network experiencing more than 12 hours of downtime within a 36-hour window.

The DOGS memecoin, introduced in July 2024 and officially became tradable on August 27, has been at the center of this turbulence. The memecoin's launch has caused substantial congestion on the TON blockchain, with over $1.7 billion in trading volume recorded within 10 hours of its debut.

Marketed as the most Telegram-native memecoin," DOGS draws inspiration from Spotty, the dog of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov. Durov's recent arrest in France on August 24 added to the heightened interest and activity surrounding DOGS.

Moreover, the official Telegram channel for Dogs has rapidly gained popularity during this period.Following the token's proposal, itgarnered approximately 17 million subscribers in under two months.

Despite the recent challenges, TON, the blockchain protocol integrated into the Telegram messaging platform, has asserted that it remains fully operational.

Impact on Toncoin

Meanwhile, after the network's restoration, Toncoin, TON's native cryptocurrency, witnessed an uptick. Its price increased 8% over the past 24 hours, to $5.57, according to CoinGecko.

However, the token's price has dropped by 17% over the past week. This decline followed Durov's arrest, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the network in recent days.

Despite the recovery in Toncoin's price, the recent outages have highlighted the vulnerabilities that can arise from the rapid adoption of new tokens. It raises questions about the blockchain's integrity, robustness, and ability to handle such massive activity.

The TON community now faces the challenge of ensuring that the network can handle such surges in activity in the future. This is particularly necessary as DOGS continues to draw significant attention and trading volume.
