ext4 Makefile - No targets. Stop

I have a VM with btrfs and I want to compile ext4. I put some printk in ext4 that I want to see.
When I run "make" in /fs/ext4, I get "No targets. Stop". I'm hoping to get an ext4.ko module and insmod it.
Will this work, or am I way off...?
