[SOLVED] KDE problems after update of 30.8.24

Running -current64 and had done a fresh install (from live iso) about 4 months ago. Everything has been running fine. After todays update (30.8) I boot to run level three as usual, updated all using slackpkg, rebuilt NVIDIA driver because of mesa update and rebooted following advice to do so after the update. Rebooted without problems and ran startx to get to KDE. KDE started (startx), screen has usual wallpaper but no icons. System tray does not come up. Xscreensaver started and runs, Konsole had started but need to use ALT-TAB to find it. Once on terminal prompt in Konsole I can start Thunderbird, chromium-ungoogled from command line and they run fine. Should I reinstall KDE? Anyone else having issues?
