US Car Rental Service Avis Hit by Major Cyber Attack

Popular US car rental service Avis was hit by a cyber attack early last month. The attack was recently confirmed by the company in a letter sent out to affected customers.
According to the company, the attack took place sometime between August 3 and August 5. It was discovered on August 5. The extent of the attack is yet to be known, but the company has already partnered up with the authorities to get to the bottom of the issue.
What Do We Know for Sure So Far?The threat actor compromised one of Avis's business applications and from there managed to get some personally identifiable information of the customers.
According to a data breach notice filed late last week with Iowa's attorney general, this includes customer names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, driver's licenses, date of birth, credit card numbers, and expiration dates.In a separate filing on Monday with Maine's attorney general, the company also revealed that a total of 299,006 individuals (to date) have been affected. And in Texas, the number is 34,592.
More data breach filings are expected to follow in the coming weeks and only then will we be able to say with certainty how many more have been affected in the breach.
What Does the Company Have to Say?We have taken steps to deploy and implement additional safeguards onto our systems, and are actively reviewing our security monitoring and controls to enhance and fortify the same." - Avis in its warning to customers
It further added that all affected customers will get a free one-year membership for credit monitoring via Equifax. The code for this needs to be redeemed by December 31st.
