ubuntu upgrade 22.04 to 24.04 failed, now no graphic and gurb won't update.

The upgrade to 24.04 failed and left me with no graphics and running 6.2.0-39-generic kernel.
I am able to ssh into the dell t7600 and home automation is still running as the light are still being controlled.
when booting it displays 24.04 on the page with maroon background first point highlights then background goes black.
There was a grub option for 22.04 on nvme0n1p3 with a 640x480 display.
But that ended when I reloaded the nvidia drive.
Now booting ends with a white screen and message "oh no! something has gone wrong"
and the ctl-alt-f3 won't start a terminal.
The video card is a nvidia quadro 4000 with nvidia 390-157 driver
but lshw -c display shows no card.

dpkg --list | grep linux-image
rc linux-image-6.2.0-37-generic 6.2.0-37.38~22.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-6.2.0-39-generic 6.2.0-39.40~22.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
rc linux-image-6.8.0-44-generic 6.8.0-44.44 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-6.8.0-45-generic 6.8.0-45.45 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic 6.8.0-45.45 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image

but the grub at startup shows ubuntu, with linux 6.2.0-39-generic (on /dev/nvme0n1p3)
there are other lines but the all end in the same result.
I am thinking that I may have done something to stop kernel upgrades so that the nvidia drive will work. But I can't find any reference to it in my notes or on google.

Looking at deleting the nvidia driver and installing nouveau instead.

Not sure how to get the grub to start using 6.8.0 kernel.

Any help appreciated
Jim

edit: removed nvidia drivers. checked and nouveau drivers in place and now at boot seeing start up splash before white screen of death. (oh no! somthing has gone wrong)
