[SOLVED] Can I Quiet a Loud Dvd Drive? Is There a Replacement for Hdparm?
by MarjaE from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6QXGH)
I picked up what was supposed to be a relatively quiet dvd drive, and supposed to be compatible with Linux. But for me it's incredibly loud in both Fedora Linux and MacOS, 65 dB at an arm's length away. Maybe it's quieter in Windows.
I've found some older advice about using hdparm to slow the drive down, which is supposed to quiet it as well, but it's no longer standard in Fedora. Hae other tools replaced hdparm?
I have auditory processing issues, so I can't filter out noise, and for me loud and incredibly loud noise is painful, and I can't separate voices from other noises, so I can't drown out the drive noise by turning up the speaker noise.
