Distrobox, where does it put containers?

Where does Distrobox put its containers? My reading of the man pages have not found that detail and my trial and error explorations have failed.
The disk space usage goes up when a container is created. Some of that disk space is from the user's home directory but not enough to account for the size of a Linux distro.
I theorize that there is some sort of "raw" image, as in a disk image, where many files are inside another file, with maybe differences, an overlay, in some format within the user's home directory, but I have not been able to ascertain for sure.
Does anyone know? Thank you.
