Grub not accessible

I am attempting to reset the root password on my linux desktop. It is currently running Linux 5.15.0 on an old iMac. When I press Esc during the boot process to access the Grub, the computer hangs on a black screen and will not boot or load the Grub. What should I do to be able to access the Grub?
