Slackware64-current on Vmware workstation speed issues

I managed to get slackware64-current running as a vmware workstation guest (host is Windows 11). But everything seems a bit slow, and I am unable to identify the cause.

- Firstly, loading the kernel seems to taken an extraordinary amount of time, about 3 minutes. It is stuck on "Loading Linux..." with each dot appearing once every 30 seconds or so. Once it finishes loading, the rest of the boot seems to go very quick. I am using 6.10.11-generic kernel with initrd.
- The keystrokes seem a bit laggy. It's not too painful, but it is noticeable when I type fast into a terminal.
- I do have VMware tools installed in the guest.
- Before boot, if I go into the vmware's BIOS screen, it moves at the pace of an old dial up modem. The screen moves in waves as it refreshes.
- I can confirm that the problem is not the host computer. I have a Windows 11 guest running in parallel (inside my Windows 11 host) and that runs super fast.

Would appreciate any input
