Should I switch my router off at night?

I always switch off any electrical equipment that isn't being used. For example I don't ever leave my TV on standby. I shut down my PC in the evening (unless I have an overnight job running) and switch off both computer and router at the mains socket. This is partly to save energy and partly for safety.
However I have read that switching off your router is harmful. This is because:
1) Suppliers often update router software overnight
2) Frequent switching on and off can be interpreted by the supplier as a line fault and lead to speed restrictions.
The first point presumably only applies to people who use a router supplied by their ISP and running on proprietary software. Mine is an all-purpose router which I bought myself. But I wonder about the second point. Any advice?
