State says most prison guards returned to work after deal to end wildcat stoppage but holdouts were dismissed

New York fired more than 2,000 prison guards on Monday for failing to return to work after an illegal work stoppage - carried out amid fallout over the high-profile deaths of two detained people as well as reports of violence by guards.

But the state said enough officers had come back on the job to declare the wildcat strike over.
