I'll be taking my bike on the train Thursday (May 8) to give a talk at Olympia Timberland Library. Join me! The event starts at 6:30, and I'm bringing a presentation full of historic images and stories that didn't make the final text. I'll also have copies and stickers available for sale and will happily sign your book.

From the event listing:

When the steamer Portland moored on the Seattle waterfront with an alleged haul of more than a ton of gold from the Klondike River in its hold, sailors and prospectors disembarked into a small city that was absolutely obsessed with bicycling. The region boomed after that fateful 1897 day, and the people have been riding bicycles for transportation, for fun, and for political organizing the whole time. From the first bicycle to reach the handful of muddy blocks called Seattle all the way to the modern day, Biking Uphill in the Rain offers a history of the city based on how the role of the bicycle changed for each generation.

Author Tom Fucoloro will present some highlights from his book Biking Uphill in the Rain: The Story of Seattle from behind the Handlebars (finalist for the 2024 Washington State Book Award) complete with historical slideshow and some behind-the-footnotes insight.
