Hazel's walking down the street, perturbed that her best friend will be embarking on a perfectly-crafted date with a total stranger for Valentine's Day, while her own boyfriend has planned NOTHING for Valentine's Day. Her self-pity slowly gives way to concern for Jamie, that this stranger will take advantage of Jamie's Pollyannaish trust of everyone (especially cute people)...

Suddenly Hazel is distracted by the sight of a brown-haired girl in short pom-pom pigtails on the sidewalk, pulling her pockets inside-out in a cartoonish display of "I'm broke." She's actually trying to find a small pretty rock she thought she pocketed yesterday on her walk, to no avail, alas.

A light bulb appears above Hazel's head, black as night. She flicks it a few times and it suddenly pops on. "A-HA!" Hazel thinks. "An IDEA."

"Are you broke?" she asks the complete stranger, with no introduction. "Because I've got seven dollars and a job for you."

Erin, who indeed happens to be broke, smiles and nods at the stranger's proposal, Pollyannaishly knowing that she'd stumbled upon an exciting, mysterious new adventure.
