It's easy to get lost in the Sattitla Highlands in remote north-eastern California. There are miles of rolling lava fields, untouched forest and obsidian mountains. At night, the darkness and silence stretch on indefinitely.

This is one of America's newest national monuments. It's also one of the most threatened.
